Have Proper Radiologic Studies been done Concerning Patients with Acute Abdominal Pain in an Emergency Room?

Abstract
diagnostic imaging modalities have been used by clinicians for evaluating or confirming tentative causes of acute abdominal pain. To evaluate whether proper selection and timing of diagnostic imaging modalites have been done in patients with
acute
abdominal pain, we retrospectively reviewed charts and X-ray films of 709 cases in 707 patients whose diagnoses were confirmed pathologically(123) or clinically(584). Among 251 patients who were hospitalized, 128 patients were treated medically
and
123
patients were treated surgically.
We assumed that complete X-ray examination was consisted of supine and erect abdominal X-ray and PA view of chest. Supine and erect simple abdominal films were skipped in 132(28.9%) of 456 immediately discharged patients and 13(5.2%) of 251
admitted
patients. Only supine or erect simple abdominal study was performed 115(25.2%) of discharged patients and 39(15%) of admitted patients. Chest PA studies were skipped in 374(82.0%) of discharged patients and in 47(18.7%) of admitted patients.
Except
for
74 patients without sufficient time for full study, 31 (17.3%) patients were evaluated by poor algorithmic approach among 179 out of 253 admitted patients.
Therefore, in order to manage the patients with acute abdomen more effectively much closer cooperation between radiologists and clinicians is required.
